How to be a part of Gulf Oil cleanup, even if you can't get there

You want to contribute to the cleanup operations in the Gulf of Mexico but are not go there! Well here are some of the ways you can volunteer to be a part of the largest cleanup operation in the history of the United States of America.

Tweet, blog, update

The National Wildlife Federation is urging those people who can volunteer or donate to spread their cause via social networking sites. They are urging people to tweet and retweet messages that have the #NWF tag. There is a Facebook fan page, and users can support the Wildlife Federation by setting up a “birthday cause.” Instead of getting presents from friends, you can direct them to donate to the organization of choice. The organization has also created web banners to be put up on websites to urge users to visit the National Wildlife Federation website and donate.

Write Letters

You can also help by writing letters to your favorite Senate members and members of Congress to urge them to support President Obama’s proposed 2011 budget, which includes $35.6 million for larger coastal restoration projects. You can get a draft of the letter from the website of Audubon Action Center.

Adopt a Pelican

The Pelican bird is one of the most affected species of birds from the oil spill disaster. Thousands of pelican brids have been drenched with oil. The International Bird Rescue Research Center will pick up the oiled brids, clean them up and will rehabilitate them.

The cost of adopting a pelican is $200, which will go to the cost of raising and eventually releasing the bird.

The Tri-State Bird Rescue is also taking donations and adoptions to rescue and rehablitate these birds in oil free areas chosen by state and federal authorities.

Leave a word of condolence

While all are focused on containment and cleanup efforts, there were lives lost in this disaster. Eleven workers died in the explosion of the Deep Water Horizon on April 20. Transocean has a condolence page on its website for people to leave memories and photos to remember those who died.
